So, before we dive in, let’s get a few questions out of the way!

A blog is a website that is regularly updated with new content. Most bloggers aim at attracting more traffic and readers, and eventually making money with their blogs.

Why should you start a blog and become just another blogger? Aren’t there millions of people who start blogs every day? Yes, there are. But do they all follow through with their blogs, grow them, promote them and make money with them? No.

So the answers to this question are:

  • A blog is a way for you to speak your mind, share your thoughts and also share your knowledge about a certain topic that you are knowledgeable about or passionate about.
  • Blogging makes you a better writer.
  • Bogging allows you to learn even more about your niche/topic.
  • Blogging can help you make money!
  • Blogging allows you to build and grow your tribe.

No you don’t. To become a successful blogger, you do not need any prior experience. This is why I have created this ultimate blogging guide to take you by the hand and show you everything step by step.

There is a learning curve, but everything is explained in detail. So take your time and take it one step at a time.

Absolutely! Whoever tells you that blogging is dead seriously does not know what they are talking about. Blogging is one of the few business models that is evergreen. It’s definitely here to stay.

Most people who quit building their blogs have one (or all) of these problems:

  • They get overwhelmed and learn way too many things (most of which they do not need in the beginning stages).
  •  They keep money in mind as their first goal. Don’t get me wrong, the end goal IS money eventually. But you want to have a different approach. Think about helping people, sharing your knowledge and expertise, delivering quality, then the money will come.
  • They choose a niche (topic) that they know nothing about. Then eventually get bored, then they quit.
  • They think blogging is an overnight riches scheme. They don’t see any money in the first couple of days or weeks. Then they decide that it does not work.

Now, if you are ready to get started with your blog, let’s get to it!

1: Pick Your Niche And Blog Name

Picking a niche can be a very intimidating and overwhelming process when you are getting started. A niche is the topic that you will want your blog to be about.

A niche is the main or specific topic that your blog is about. This is the topic all your content (text or otherwise) will be about.

When picking your blog niche, here are a few factors to keep in mind:

  • Are you passionate about this topic? Do you enjoy taking about it?
  • Do you know enough about it and/or are you willing to do more research?
  • Are there products you could promote that are related to this topic?

Ultimately, you are trying to make money with your blog, so when picking a niche, it should be something you like, you know about (or willing to learn about) and it should be something that can allow you to make money selling it (more on that later).

Of course you could blog about multiple topics in your blog! There is no internet police that will come and arrest you 😀

Jokes aside though, when you choose to blog about multiple topics, not all your visitors will be interested in all that you write about. It is as if you will have your readers’ “divided” attention. Also, you will find that your brain is scattered all over the place trying to think about multiple topics that are not related to each other. I personally think it’s a waste of time and energy. But in the end, how you want to go about this is entirely up to you.

If you pick a single niche on the other hand, all your visitors will be interested in all aspects of your topic, because they are interested in your niche. You will have their undivided attention when they visit your blog.

Once you have chosen a niche for your blog, it’s time to choose a name for your blog. Your blog name will look something like: yourblogname.com. This is known as a domain name. For example, you are reading this blogging guide on my blog and my blog name is thedotcomgal.com.

Your name should reflect what your blog is about. For example, if you choose to blog about travel, you could use names such as: solotraveler.com, or globeadventurer.com. You get the idea.

If you are unable to choose a name at this point, don’t sweat it. You can also choose your own personal name if you want to, and be your own brand.

If you are looking for a free tool to give you domain name ideas, you can visit: https://namemesh.com. All you need to do is enter your main keyword (for example “travel), then the tool will give you all sorts of possible name combinations. Not only does this tool show you suggestions, but it also shows you which domains are available for you to use.

2. Get Your Blog Online

Once you have chosen your blog name, it’s time to get it up and online so that you can get started with your very first blog post even today. To start your blog, you need a hosting provider in order for your blog to be live.

We will go through the steps you need to follow to get your blog online in this step.

I have made a video showing you how to get it done in just over 12 minutes. You can either watch the video here or follow the steps below.

Hosting in a nutshell is a space you rent to keep your content safe in cyberspace. Think of it as paying rent for your store. You definitely need that to get started blogging.

Technically, yes, you can. However, you will be very limited in what you can achieve with your blog. Starting a blog on a free platform like Blogger.com or WordPress.com means that your content can be taken down any time, without warning, because it does not belong to you.

If you invest in hosting however, your content belongs to you and nobody can take it away from you.

Not at all! It’s a tiny investment if you compare it to the potential of your blog once you grow it and start making money.

Investing in hosting is part of investing in your business. With Bluehost, it only costs just under $150 for 3 years. Also, if you click on the link above, you may still be able to get it at that huge discounted price.

We will start our blog on WordPress. If you haven’t heard of WordPress before, it is a blogging platform that more than 60% of bloggers use. What I personally use is WordPress combined with hosting from BlueHost. Bluehost is one of the best hosting providers available today. They are reputable, very cost-effective and they have been in business for over 15 years.

You do not have to pay anything extra to install WordPress in your domain. Read on to know more about this.

I have recently switched over to Bluehost and I am very happy with my choice, so I highly recommend them.

The price is normally $7.99, but you will get a discount if you click the image or link above. Once you click on the green button, you will need to choose your plan. I have chosen the Choice Plus plan and it’s the one I recommend because you will get the possibility to have multiple websites, if you choose to start a blog again in the future. However, if you are just getting started and only plan to have one single blog, then you can choose the Basic plan at $3.95. Sometimes you will even be able to get further discounts. Keep on reading to see how.

Choose Your Plan:

Once you have decided on your preferred plan, click “select” then you will be directed to the next page where you will enter your new domain name.

Choose Your Domain:

You can either enter a new domain name or, if you already have one, you can enter it there. In either case, you will still get a free new domain name when you sign up to Bluehost. If you are unable to choose a domain name now, don’t worry about it. You can just click on: “I’ll create my domain later”. Once you sign up, you will be able to a get a new domain name for free anyway.

Create Your Account:

Once you are done choosing your domain name, the next page is where you need to enter your details to create your Bluehost account. Fill in your details, including your name, email address etc. Make sure you choose a good email address that you are checking on a regular basis, because this is where your new account details, and all future communications from Bluehost will be sent.

Alternatively, you can also sign in with Google if you would like to use your Gmail email address to sign up.

Sometimes, you can get even further discounts, just by staying long enough on the page or if you are trying to leave. As you can see on the image below, we managed to get a discount down to $2.65 per month! Click the image below to see if you can get the same.

Choose Your Package

Whether you receive that discount or not, $3.95 per month is still a great price. Now it is time to choose your package. I recommend going for the 36-month plan because it will give you the biggest discount. If you choose 12 months, you will pay more than $3.95 (or $2.65), if you choose 24 months, you will pay slightly less, but if you choose 36 months, you will pay the lowest price per month.

I personally took the 36-month plan. That way, I paid the lowest price as you can see below ($5.45 for Choice Plus – but you can choose Basic if you prefer). This also allows me not to worry about paying my hosting for the next 3 years. Click here to get this discount.

Choose Your Extras (Optional):

After choosing your package, it’s time to choose your extras. This is completely optional and you don’t have to add anything else.

Bluehost SEO Tools: This is a tool that helps you with SEO (search engine optimization), which is what helps your website/blog rank in Google (or other search engines) search results. You can use a free plugin instead. However, if you want to buy this, you can check the box.

Sitelock Security: this is a security plugin that protects your website/blog from malicious attacks (by hackers for example). You can add that as shown in the image below, if you want. Alternatively, you can use some free options that I will share with you later.

You don’t need any of those extras to get started with your blog. However, if you want them, you are more than welcome to buy them.

Enter Your Billing Info:

Here you will have the choice to either pay using a credit card or PayPal.

After entering your payment details, check the box that says that you agree with the terms of service and policies. Then click on the green button that says: “submit”.

Congratulations!

Congratulations! You have just finished your first step of how to start a blog and make money! Tap yourself on the shoulder because you are well on your way to learning how to make money blogging!

3. Install WordPress

Once you have your Bluehost account set-up, you need to install WordPress in order to start blogging. Watch the video tutorial below on how to install WordPress on Bluehost.

4. Your Blog Design and Plugins:

Once you have installed WordPress on your new blog, it’s time to design it and make it look nice. Your blog design is the first thing that people will see when they land on your home page. So it’s very important to spend some time choosing the right theme for your blog, as well as choosing a theme that will load fast, has good features all while looking good too.

Your Blog Theme:

When it comes to choosing a theme for your blog, you can go two ways: a paid theme or a free one. Since you have just invested in your hosting, I will assume that you will want to save any unnecessary costs at this point. So I suggest you go for a free WordPress theme for now. You can change it any time later whenever you feel the need to.

When I got started with this blog, I used a few free themes before I bought a premium one. The one I am using on this blog is called: GeneratePress. I recently switched over from another theme I used for years, it was Backstreet. I was very happy with it, but I wanted to change the look of my blog, so I got GeneratePress

I love how GeneratePress is fully customizable and has so many features and options. You can download the free version to have a feel of it before you decide to upgrade if you want to:

I am very happy with it. Feel free to choose the same one if you want or choose others.

If you want some suggestions on some good free WordPress themes, here are my favorites. They are all free, with an option to upgrade, but it’s completely optional:

Watch the video below to learn how to install your WordPress theme and customize your blog:

Necessary Plugins:

Once you have chosen your preferred WordPress theme, you need to install a few plugins.

A WodrPress plugin is like a little mini-software that adds a few features to your site, without you having to code anything or be a tech expert. Different plugins have different functions and allow you to tweak your blog many different ways. For example, there are some plugins that help you optimize your images, others make it easy to collect your readers’ email details, others can help you sell your products online, etc.

Choosing the right and essential plugins for your blog can be tough if you are a beginner, since there are literally thousands of plugins to choose from. This is why I have created a video to show you what plugins you can get started with. Watch the video below.

For more details about the above plugins, click here to read the detailed blog post.

5. Write Your First Blog Post:

So far, you have set up your hosting, you have installed WordPress, you have chosen your theme and installed the necessary plugins.

Now you are ready to start rocking and cranking up that beautiful content, so that people come and read what you have to say

A Note About Content Quality:

Apart from looking great and having fresh content regularly, people come to read blogs because of the content the bloggers create. If you create good quality content, people will come back for more. If you create crappy content, people won’t. It’s that simple.

Creating quality content is what will help you build relationships with your readers, build your tribe, expand your audience and subsequently, make money.

This is why it’s important to start with choosing a niche that you actually care about. When choosing your blog topic or niche, you need to choose something that you are knowledgeable about, or that you at least care enough about to do research and create content about. Don’t make the mistake of choosing a niche just because it’s known to be profitable while you don’t care for it. You will eventually get bored and just quit down the line.

You can learn more about what mistakes new bloggers make if you click on the link below:

Now that we got the importance of content quality out of the way, it’s time to create your first piece of content 🙂

I have made a video showing you how to create your first blog post. Watch it below:

Adding Images and/or Graphics:

Adding images/graphics and/or videos to your blog posts is VITAL!

We live in a visual era when it comes to content. And when you send people to a basic text-only page, although your content is great, chances are they will not stay for too long. It’s always important to add media in your content for these reasons:

  • Media-rich content gets shared 150% more.
  • Content that has graphics is more visually appealing.
  • If you have videos within your content, people tend to stay longer on your page.

6. Creating The Necessary Pages on Your Blog:

There are a few necessary pages you will need on your blog before you think about launching it and before you think about promoting it. When starting a blog, and especially if you are planning to make money with it, you need to have a page that introduces who you are, another page where people can get in touch with you and a couple of legal pages.

Your About Me page:

This is a page where you introduce yourself and maybe talk about your experience as a blogger, or whatever you have done in your life. Basically this is what will tell the reader who is behind what they read. You can always update and fine-tune this page as you go along.

Your Contact page:

This is a very important page to have in your blog. If people want to hire you (if you are offering services), or contact you for any reason, your contact details must be available and easy to find on your home page.

Legal Pages:

Your legal pages are: Terms of Service, Privacy Policy and, optionally, you will want to have an Affiliate Disclaimer page if you are planning to go the affiliate marketing route (I will explain more about that later when we talk about how to make money blogging).

You can have a look at my legal pages to see what they are about. They are basically pages that protect you and your blog and allow you to be compliant.

Very Important! Before Promoting Your Blog, Read This:

The next steps I am going to cover are extremely important and should be followed before even thinking about promoting your blog.

Make Sure Your Blog is "Traffic-Ready"!

Before starting to send traffic to your blog, you need to make your blog “traffic-ready”. What I mean by traffic-ready is that you need to have these items in place:

  • Enough content to bring in traffic: you don’t want to send traffic to a blog that has only one to three blog posts, do you!
  • Blog monetization. You need to have ways to make money through your blog already in place before you start promoting your content. This is going to be the next step I will cover.
  • You have a way to get people’s email addresses when they visit your blog. Collecting your reader’s email address is vital to your blog. This will be the final step before promotion. Read on to learn how to do that.

7. Monetize Your Content To Make Money Blogging:

What is blog monetization?

Simply put, monetizing your blog in a nutshell is making your blog ready to make money or have a chance of making money every time someone visits one of your blog posts or pages.

There are many ways to monetize your blog and I cover some of the most profitable and popular ones in this video:

I personally love and prefer affiliate marketing. It’s the best way to make money if you are getting started with your blog. In order to understand a little more about affiliate marketing, watch the video below.

8. Collect Emails And Build Your List:

One of the biggest blogging mistakes that I have made when I got started was to overlook the importance of building a list of subscribers.

What is an email list?

An email list or subscribers list is a list of people who agree to give you their email address and give you the permission to contact them from time to time with either your newly published content or product recommendations.

Why should you build a list?

  • Traffic: when you have a list of subscribers, you have traffic on demand. The bigger your list is, the more traffic your blog will get. It’s basically as if you were opening a traffic tap.
  • Making money with your blog: your subscribers are eventually going to become your fans if you treat them right, through a good email marketing strategy, and they will eventually listen to you and follow your recommendations. When they start knowing, liking and trusting you, they will definitely buy from you.

What do you need to build a list?

A Lead Magnet:

This is what you are going to offer to your potential subscribers in return for their email address. This could be a free gift like a mini e-book, a checklist, a free course, or even your newsletter subscription. It needs to be of value and it needs to be free. If you don’t know what to offer as a lead magnet, watch my video below:

how to start a blog

An Autoresponder:

This is a software you will use to collect email addresses and be able to send emails to your subscribers whenever you want. An autoresponder automates the whole process. Here are the autoresponders I recommend:

Aweber:

This service costs $19 per month for the first 500 subscribers, then it goes up to $29 etc. You can however try it for 30 days for free and see if you like it. Click the image below to claim your free 30-day trial:

how to start a blog

Get Response:

GetResponse is slightly cheaper than Aweber. Also, the advantage is that you pay only $15.00 per month up to 1,000 subscribers. It does save you some money. You can get a free 30-day trial with GetResponse too. Click the image below to claim your 30-day Free trial.

how to start a blog

I have used both of them and I like both. There a few differences in pricing, but they are both great services.

You can try both and see which one you like better. You can always switch autoresponders at a later stage.

Optional: A page builder:

You want to be able to build a landing page or a squeeze page.

A squeeze page is a page that has only one purpose: to collect people’s email addresses. The better your squeeze page, the better your chances are to collect emails. My favorite page builder is Elementor. It offers a lot of features and is very cost-effective.

Click here to see what a squeeze page looks like.

It also has a free version that, although a bit limited, offers a lot of cool features.

Click here to check out Elementor.

9. Promote Your Blog:

Now that your blog is “traffic-ready” as we discussed earlier, it is time to start with a promotion or content marketing plan.

Writing great content without promoting it is like opening a great store but locking the door. Nobody will ever know about your content if you don’t promote it.

Promoting your content is key and vital. And it should be done HEAVILY!

Writing great content without promoting it is like opening a great store but locking the door!

Here are a few of my favorite ways to promote my blog:

Use social media:

Social media is a great way to get the word out. But don’t go too crazy with it. Only choose the networks where you know your audience is hanging out. There is no need to choose Instagram if your audience doesn’t use it. No point in creating a social media account in ALL the networks. Just use the ones you know will work for you.

Comment on related high authority blogs:

Blog commenting is not dead. Look for blogs in your niche and blogs that have high authority.

For example, when you search for a keyword on Google, the blogs that are on the first page of Google are high authority blogs that get a lot of traffic. Visit those blogs, look for the content you are knowledgeable about, and leave long meaningful comments giving value first.

When you leave valuable comments, people will wonder who you are and they are sure to want to check you out and visit your blog.

Remember, blogging is not an overnight success. It takes time, effort and hard work to build your audience.

Blogging is not an overnight success. It takes time, effort and hard work to build your audience!

Use Forums:

Joining forums and communities in your niche is a great way to build relationships with people in your market. You can meet fellow bloggers and start conversations on forums. If you know a lot about your niche, a great way to use forums is to position yourself as an expert whose opinion people seek overtime.

Once you have established your account and posted some helpful and useful content, you can use your forum signature to attract people to your blog. I always recommend a page that is either a squeeze page (to collect people’s emails), or a content page where you have opt-in boxes (like this one you are reading now).

Use Video Marketing:

Video marketing is an excellent skill to learn. There is literally no limit to the amount of traffic that videos can send you. Provided you are doing it right, of course.

With that being said, video marketing is a little outside the scope of this blogging guide. However, if you are interested in learning how to rank videos on YouTube, click here to check out this free video ranking checklist.

Use Q&A Sites

Q&A sites are websites that allows people to either/both ask questions and/or answer questions.

I do not recommend linking out to your blog right after you sign up. Instead, answer questions, interact with people, even ask some questions. Once you have some content in there, you can start choosing questions that are related to your content and link out to your blog posts or videos.

Here are two great Q&A sites that I recommend:

Yahoo Answers: it’s free to join. Yahoo Answers has been around for ages.

Quora: although much newer than Yahoo Answers, Quora has quickly gained traction and become one of the go-to sites to ask questions.

You can use the sites above for almost any niche you are in. There are always people asking questions that are related to your topic and that you could answer.

Use Paid Traffic:

Paid traffic is an excellent way to promote your blog content if you don’t feel like spending too much time commenting on blogs or joining forums.

There are so many options for paid traffic. And I will create a turorial about different platforms to use in the near future. As of now, here are some examples of paid traffic:

  • Facebook ads.
  • Google ads.
  • YouTube ads.
  • Reddit ads.
  • Twitter ads.
  • Pinterest ads.
  • Microsoft ads (used to be called Bing ads).

The above are but a tiny list of examples of paid traffic. I will create a tutorial soon about different types of paid traffic. If you want to see that, stay in touch by subscribing to my 7-day blogging course below:

Send email updates to your list:

This is when your list will come in handy. When you have a list of loyal subscribers, promoting your blog post becomes very easy. Your list of subscribers is a list of your number one fans.

When they start to know, like and trust you, getting traffic from them, getting them to engage, share and comment on your content becomes very easy. Like I mentioned earlier, it’s traffic on demand!

10. Make Money Blogging:

When you start promoting your blog heavily, making money with your blog will become the easy part.

When you write great content that helps people in your niche, they will start trusting you and trusting your judgement when it comes to recommending products and tools to them.

Another great way to make money with your blog is to send your subscribers emails promoting the products you recommend and making affiliate commissions.

However, before you send out promotional emails to your subscribers, you need to build a relationship with them through what is called email marketing.

Email Marketing:

According to Wikipedia:

Email marketing is the act of sending a commercial message, typically to a group of people, using email. In its broadest sense, every email sent to a potential or current customer could be considered email marketing. It involves using email to send advertisements, request business, or solicit sales or donations. Email marketing strategies commonly seek to achieve one or more of three primary objectives, to build loyalty, trust, or brand awareness. The term usually refers to sending email messages with the purpose of enhancing a merchant’s relationship with current or previous customers, encouraging customer loyalty and repeat business, acquiring new customers or convincing current customers to purchase something immediately, and sharing third-party ads.”

Email marketing is an excellent skill to have and a great way to connect with your audience. It also is the best way to make money blogging.

Due to the very detailed nature of email marketing, it is outside the scope of this guide at the moment.

With that said, if you want to learn more about email marketing and learn how to build a relationship with your subscribers, nurture your list and earn audience trust, I highly recommend Adam Payne’s The Conversion Point course.

Bonus Step: Have Fun!

I had to add this extra step in the process of how to make money blogging. It’s very important to have fun throughout the process and enjoy what you are doing when starting a blog.

Remember, this is not an overnight success. You should put in time, work and a lot of patience if you want to make money blogging and turn your passion into an income.

How to Start a Blog And Make Money - Conclusion:

So, wow, starting a blog sounds like a LOT of work, huh! Well, it kind of is and isn’t at the same time. It all depends on how you see it.

If you see it as a long term financial goal, then the work you put in is not even compared to the benefits. However, if you see it as something that you expect to pay you overnight but fails to do so (because it will; blogging is not an overnight thing), then yes, it’s a lot of work for nothing.

If you have followed along with me, congratulations for starting your blog today! If you have not, I am sure you are on your way to start a blog and make money. I think it’s safe to say now that you are confident to start a blog on your own!
